over a year since their last release, birdsmakingmachine come back hitting hard with a diverse three-track ep ranging from deep to minimal house. the title track “deaf crows” intelligently layers delayed snares and elaborate hihats into subtle analogue pads and melodies, resulting in a sophisticated, yet dj-friendly composition. at over 10min long, it’s an endless rotation of industrial rawness that manages to melt into the smooth and rich textures for which the birds are known. “black midget”, on the flip, goes into darker depths, with an almost broken 4/4 beat underlying overly swinging rhythmic arrangements and hypnotic synth lines that reminisce some of the earlier bmm material. finishing off the record is the simply titled “primos”, offering a more minimalistic approach with its intricate arrangement of quirky arpeggiating melodies and playfully juggling hihats, closing off the ep in the neatest birdsmakingmachine fashion.

nice price deal !!! black patterns vol. 1 is the full-length album release by lobster theremin regular snow bone, revealing a more spectrally destructive and experimental side through his black patterns moniker. the lp is a depositary for plaque-coated material culled from a series of experiments with his own ‘oblique strategies’ style limitations or ‘tasks’. this conceptually translates into eight raw-to-the-bone styles of techno, house, noise and electro, segueing through layers of blown-out sounds and scattered intricacies along the way.

this release was born of a cross country trip with an 808 drum machine by thomas ragsdale aka winter son, alongside jozef k, resident of famed manchester and ibiza clubnight sankey, as they join perseus traxx to hammer electricity out of machines. with it&#700,,,s rim shots and claps and other transistor rhythms reverberating across vast distances of space, side a is stripped back and deep from the outset, pushing forward as scattered tones, arpeggiations and disjointed voices leave their trails vanishing from perception. side b tightens up from the previous reverbs and throws acid into the mix, as the two join perseus traxx and the sound becomes more raw and urgent as the three of them jam on their chosen machines.
